DESCRIPTION:Economic Development Australia (EDA) proudly presents a special webinar series designed to support economic development professionals as they help communities recover and rebuild following the 2019-20 bushfires. \nThe first of this series is presented across three sessions\, featuring globally recognised disaster recovery expert\, Professor Edward J Blakely. \nSession 2: Basic Resources to Good Recovery \nDuring this session\, Professor Blakely provides advice regarding effectively assembling and deploying local resources to assist community recovery. \n\nPRESENTER\nIn 2007\, Ed was appointed by the Mayor of New Orleans as the Executive Director for Recovery\, coordinating all aspects of the City’s recovery from Hurricane Katrina. He was responsible for the major downtown revitalisation plan for Oakland\, California as well as that City’s earthquake and fire recovery projects. \nHe teaches urban and rural development\, regional policy and community development. Through the Future Cities Program\, Ed has led city re-visioning programs in 19 cities in the Sydney Metropolitan area. He currently serves as strategic advisor to the City of Parramatta and Liverpool. The session will provide a practical\, stepped approach to disaster response\, first-hand experiences and tips for economic development professionals to employ in the short\, medium and long-term. \nJoin the live session to share your own experiences and raise questions with colleagues who understand the challenges involved in disaster recovery. \n\nPresenters\nSally McDonald   \n \nSally Macdonald is a communications and government relations professional with a passion for small business resilience. \nHer extensive work supporting economic recovery following the 2009 Victorian bushfires led to her co-authoring several resources to guide small businesses and regional business communities through the crisis planning\, response and rebuilding journey. \nHer personable and engaging manner and depth of experience make her a popular Small Business Victoria workshop facilitator. \n  \nBruce Connolly | Manager Economic Development Unit\, Latrobe City Council \n \nBruce Connolly is currently the Manager of the Economic Development Unit at Latrobe City Council. The Unit encompasses business development\, trade\, regional strategy\, export and is responsible for the operation of the Latrobe Regional Airport and the International Relations team. \nPrior to working at Council Bruce operated a small consultancy firm\, Nexus Strategy Group for thirteen years in Regional Victoria. Following the 2006/07 bushfires\, Bruce’s consultancy firm provided support services to small businesses in Gippsland\, including recovery strategies and future planning. He also worked with small businesses following the Black Saturday fires in 2009 in recovery activities and planning for the future. \nBruce has a Bachelor of Business (Public Administration) and a Graduate Diploma in Economic Development (Auckland University of Technology).
