EDA Women 2019

Join us for the inaugural EDA Women event – dedicated to women in economic and business development.

Over a delicious brunch we will explore the challenges and triumphs faced by women in Economic Development and share some strategies to navigate being a professional woman in today’s society.

Keynote Speaker – Catherine Fox

Inspiring from the start we begin the morning hearing from journalist and author Catherine Fox, one of Australia’s leading commentators on women and the workforce. During a long career with the Financial Review she wrote the weekly Corporate Woman column; and has published five books, including ‘Stop Fixing Women” (NewSouth), which was awarded the 2017 Walkley Award for Women’s Leadership in Media. Her latest book “Women Kind” (with co-author Dr Kirstin Ferguson) examines how female solidarity and support is rebooting the global women’s movement.

Catherine was recently named in the Financial Review/Qantas 100 Women of Influence list for 2018. She is a member of the Australian Women Donors Network board, and co-founder of the Sydney Women’s Giving Circle.

Laura Murray
Current Victorian President of Planning Institute Australia and Director of Planning – Ethos Urban

Laura has been a strong voice for PIA and women in the planning profession through her role as VIC President.

Laura is also a consultant town planner with over 15years experience in statutory and strategic planning for public and private clients, including several years in local government in the UK. Having worked on major development approvals all over Australia, she has Detailed knowledge of planning systems and legislation in all states and territories.

her expertise encompasses large-scale, complex projects across a wide range of sectors, including growth area frameworks; structure plans; policy/zone review; and re-zoning requests for many green wedge proposals; in addition to inner city and greenfield developments for high-density mixed-use; multi-unit residential; commercial and industrial; heritage; retirement living; national retail and petroleum / fast food rollouts. Laura excels at delivering successful urban design advice and quality built form planning outcomes for our rapidly growing cities and regions.


Carley Scott

Carley is known for building strong businesses in challenging environments. She is a technology, investment, and international trade expert who is currently leading the development of Australia’s first commercial spaceport, with a view to launch and recover rockets this year.

Carley is working with NASA and similarly respected organisations and agencies around the world, placing her at the cutting edge of technology and innovation practices undertaken by large entities.

Previously, Carley was entrusted by Rio Tinto and the Northern Territory Government as the inaugural CEO tasked with building a multi-million-dollar economic development company that is now internationally referred to as best practice in developing towns in transition.

In 2016, Carley’s team received Economic Development Australia’s national award for ‘Development in a Rural or Remote Area’, and Anthill Magazine’s National ‘Social Capitalist Award’. In 2017, Carley won the ‘Telstra Business Women’s Award’ (For Purpose, Northern Territory).  In 2018, Carley was nominated as Australian of the Year.

Carley is a strong supporter of local government, having previously worked with Banyule, Manningham and Brimbank City Councils.


This formidable panel will be facilitated by John Bradley, Secretary of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning in the Victorian Government. John is a Male Champion of Change in the department where 53% of Executives are female and programs are in place to support and develop women in leadership roles.
