Economic Development Australia Awards 2007 - winners announced

More than 220 people from Local Government Councils, State Governments and Regional Development Agencies across Australia applauded the finalists and the winners of the Economic Development Excellence Awards (affectionately known as the ED Awards) for 2007.  Sixty eight [68] city and regional organisations from all parts of Australia entered the 2007 Awards.

Awards Director, Marg Nicholls commented that “the high standard of received submissions proved once again that ED practitioners within local & regional governments are actively pursuing sustainable business development and growth opportunities to achieve long term economic prosperity for their regions”.

The ED Awards were presented at a Gala Dinner held at the Dockside Conference Centre, Cockle Bay, Sydney on 31st October 2007.   Finalists and award winners for the nine award categories came from the 68 organisations across Australia that submitted entries.
 
The keynote speaker at the ED Awards, the acting Director General of the NSW Department of State & Regional Development, Mike Cullen, congratulated all finalists for their contribution to local economic development activity.  Mr Cullen said that local government and regional bodies have a vital role to play in stimulating employment and business conditions.
 
The Maroochy City Council [Qld] was the winner of the Best Overall Performance. The City was a winner in two of the Awards categories.
 
The category Award winners were:

  • Local Government Association of Queensland - Strategy Award;
  • Gold Coast City Council [Qld] - Promotion – Business Attraction Award;
  • Maroochy City Council [Qld]  - Promotion – Publications Award; 
  • Maroochy City Council [Qld], Promotion – Internet Award;
  • South Eastern ACC [NSW] - Innovation Award; 
  • Shire of Derby/West Kimberley [WA] - Partnerships Award;
  • Cr Paul Pisasale Ipswich City Council [Qld] - Leadership-elected Award; and
  • David Penfold, City of Salisbury [SA] - Leadership-employee Award.

EDA Chairman, David Keenan said “This year’s ED Awards has confirmed the status of the awards, and the role they are playing in raising the profile of economic development initiatives within councils and also the profile of  economic development professionals.  

Mr Keenan said  “On behalf of the Board of Economic Development Australia, I would like to congratulate all the organisations which submitted entries and to encourage them to do so again in 2008. Details of how to enter the 2008 Awards will be available by midway through next year.”

The Awards are sponsored by Telstra, Delfin Lend Lease, Australian Made, Sensis, Regional Development Victoria, MAB Corporation, Essential Economics, Sinclair Knight Merz and Stockland Corporation.
