2005 National Excellence Awards

The first national economic development awards for local government were presented at a ceremony held in Melbourne and attended by more than 120 council and community representatives.
 
Known as the ED Awards, the competition to locate outstanding performances by councils, community groups and individuals attracted nearly 60 entries and was coordinated by the Economic Development Association of Victoria (EDAV).
 
The Awards were presented in the categories of Partnerships; Strategy, Innovation, Leadership,and Promotion.
 
The winners were: Public Private Partnerships - City of Onkaparinga (SA); Strategy - City of Salisbury (SA); Innovation - Tweed and Northern Rivers Regional Economic Model; Leadership (elected member) Cr David Vendy - Mayor of the City of Ballarat; Leadership (employee) Rochelle Vick - Greater Shepparton City Council; Promotion (Business Attraction) - Swan City Rural Council; Promotion (Publications) - City of Maroondah; and Promotion (Internet) Greater Taree Council.

This award is made to the Australian local government authority that demonstrates a holistic approach to sustainable economic development. The award will be made to local government authorities that can demonstrate and exhibit that economic development is a part of their core business and embedded in its strategic planning.

Category: Promotion - Business Attraction
 
The best efforts of economic development organisations will be recognized for attracting and retaining business and industry in their communities through marketing materials.

The Promotion - Business Publications category awards organisations that have demonstrated the ability to design and produce materials that communicate effectively to the target audience and generate responses.

The Promotion - Internet awards honour communities and organisations that are using the World Wide Web as an effective marketing tool to promote services and offer information to business.

Category: Innovation
 
This award recognizes outstanding and innovative programs in economic and business development that retain or generate jobs and investment on an ongoing basis. Potential program areas include, but are not limited to, retention, workforce development, industrial/commercial economic development, economic development, finance and real estate.

This award recognizes outstanding and innovative public/private development projects that have significantly enhanced the economic revitalizationof an area. Projects in this category demonstrate the importance of public-private partnership in economic development.

Category: Leadership - Elected
 
This award will go to an elected official of local government that has undertaken outstanding service in the field of economic development that has lead to a higher level of recognition in the broader community.
 
The people nominated for this award have undertaken project specific activities that have lead to behavioural change in their own organisation or in the wider community that have lead to achieving significant steps to greater levels of sustainable economic development. These people have also been involved in significant levels of community or industry consultation.
